Programs Offered

At Salem College, we welcome and value the pursuit of advanced degrees. Students may choose from multiple graduate studies in education.

Salem College offers graduate programs in the following areas:

  • Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
  • Master of Education in School Counseling
  • School Counseling Certificate

The graduate programs are fully online and designed to accommodate working students. Small class sizes and hands-on support from professors are among the program’s features.

Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and Residency Licensure

The MAT program is a two-phase program. Phase 1 results in initial teacher licensure and meets the state requirements for those on a Residency License, and Phase 2 results in a Master’s degree and advanced licensure. Salem offers the following licensure areas:

  • Elementary Education
  • Special Education: General Curriculum
  • Middle School English Language Arts, Science, Math, or Social Studies
  • High School English, Science, Math, or Social Studies
  • K-12 Art
  • K-12 Spanish

Master of Education (MEd) in School Counseling

The MEd in School Counseling program is an online program designed to prepare candidates for K–12 school counseling licensure. Coursework focuses on counseling skills, ethics, career development, and comprehensive school counseling program design. Students complete supervised practicum and internship experiences in school settings and participate in on-campus residency experiences to strengthen applied skills.

Program features include:

  • Flexible, online coursework designed for working professionals
  • Intentional course sequencing fosters strong peer connections and professional relationships
  • On-campus residency experiences focused on skill development
  • Supervised practicum and internship in K–12 schools
  • Preparation for North Carolina school counseling licensure

School Counseling Certificate

The School Counseling Certificate program is designed for individuals who already hold a master’s degree in counseling (e.g., addiction; career; clinical mental health; college counseling and student affairs; marriage, couple, and family counseling; or rehabilitation counseling) and who are now seeking to add coursework needed for school counseling licensure in the state of North Carolina. 

Program of Study

School Counseling Certificate courses may be completed following a 1-year plan. Students may begin in fall (August), spring (January) or summer (May) terms.
