Academic Programs
Study Away
Studying away from campus helps our students develop confidence, responsibility, and problem solving. They gain a global mindset, become aware of other cultures, and gain new perspectives. Simply, students learn best by doing and thrive when they are active participants in shaping their educational experiences. Salem’s Study Away program brings these core beliefs into action. Within this program, Salem faculty and staff offer individualized support to students who wish to receive academic course credit for study outside the Salem campus, and outside the United States.
Salem partners with AIFS Study Abroad, CIS Abroad, Harlaxton College, Meredith College, and Oxford University to provide students with a wide variety of pre-approved study abroad opportunities around the globe. Recently students have studied away in France, Spain, Australia, Costa Rica, and Greece. Upcoming faculty-led trips are planned to Austria, London, and Venice.
Student Experience
“Studying abroad as a first-generation student meant that my family’s sacrifices were finally recognized. The opportunity to discover a world that my parents never had and something so valuable to them was in my hands. Studying abroad broadened my horizons to new experiences, contacts, and friendships. During my internship, I formed a strong bond with the radiology department, which broadened my perspective on health care and made me realize how badly I want to join a radiology department to learn how everything works!”
Melanie Tellez – Spain, Summer 2023
“Study Abroad was one of the most fun, educating, and rewarding experiences of my life!”
Taylor Moulton – Australia, Spring 2020
Health Leadership Highlights
Exploring the world as a pre-health student is a powerful way to put academic theory into real-world practice, and to investigate the vast differences in health care systems around the world. Salem provides multiple opportunities for students to study away through a lens of health leadership, including:
- Global Health Internship Summer Fellowship (recent interns have worked in Seville, Spain and Paris, France)
- Partnership with Atlantis (global medical and veterinary shadowing)
- Faculty-led study away London trip focused on Global Health
