Salem Academy and College is located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, a vibrant college

Position Summary:

The Evening Library Specialist (ELS) provide staff coverage and supervise student workers in Gramley Library in the evening hours during the fall and spring academic semesters. Responsibilities include providing direct customer services, performing a variety of circulation tasks, reinforcing policies and procedures, resolving issues typically handled by full-time staff, as well as answering or referring general reference and informational questions. Each ELS covers two to three evening shifts weekly.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide staff coverage during evening hours (5pm – Midnight), Sunday – Thursday
  • Supervise student workers and reinforce policies and procedures
  • Provide direct assistance to faculty, staff, students and community members
  • Perform circulation and interlibrary loan tasks
  • Troubleshoot library technology and refer issues to the IT Department as necessary
  • Manage and troubleshoot facility-related issues and refer to the appropriate staff or department
  • Other circulation projects, as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication, oral, interpersonal, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement/security best practices and procedures.
  • Analytical skills and objective observation of situations and quick decision-making.
  • Skill in managing situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and impartially.
  • De-escalation skills
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently with demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship between diverse operating organizations.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to cope with changing requirements, and goals (sometimes rapid changes).
Required Qualifications:
  • Customer service experience
  • Supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate with a variety of users
  • Experience with Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Drive, etc) and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.)
Physical Functions:
  • Bend, squat, stand, kneel, walk, run, crawl, and climb.
  • Regularly ascend/descend stairs.
  • Walk for long distances and sit for varying lengths of time.
  • Reach above shoulders, handle keys/tools/objects, push, pull, carry, or lift objects over 40 lbs.
  • Work may necessitate accessing and working in confined spaces or high spaces.
  • Must be physically able to perform tasks appropriately.
  • Must be physically able to operate the equipment required to perform duties.
  • Work in an indoor/outdoor environment subject to changing temperatures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in an academic library
